The NSW Resources Regulator has identified an increase in the occurrence of serious incidents in 2018. It is the role of the regulator to remind industry that any one of these serious incidents could have resulted in one or more fatalities.


2 April 2018 - Werris Creek Coal

A worker suffered a serious laceration on his lower back when the articulated water cart he was driving rolled over. Other workers provided first aid to the injured worker before he was transported to hospital for treatment. The NSW Resources Regulator has commenced an investigation into the incident.

21 April 2018 - Maules Creek

A worker suffered serious injuries when the service truck he was driving and a large haul truck collided. The injured worker was transported to hospital for treatment. The NSW Resources Regulator has commenced an investigation into the incident.

23 June 2018 - Tritton underground metalliferous

A 60 tonne underground mine dump truck caught fire, blocking a main decline and contaminating the ventilation in the mine. This resulted in an emergency evacuation and mines rescue response.

All mine workers underground reported to places of safety or refuge chambers, before they were subsequently brought to the surface. The fire was eventually extinguished by members of the mines rescue team. There were no injuries.

26 June 2018 - Bulga open cut Hunter Valley

A drill rig at an open cut coal mine trammed over and through a highwall windrow resulting in the machine straddling the windrow with one track suspended over the edge of the highwall. There were no injuries.

28 June 2018 - Bengalla open cut

The hazards of complex intersection design in open cut mines were highlighted when a light vehicle operator had to take evasive action to prevent a collision with a haul truck. There were no injuries.

4 July 2018 - Clarence Colliery Blue Mountains

Falling coal rib struck two workers in the underground workings of the mine when the strata failed on 4 July 2018. One of the workers suffered serious injuries. The NSW Resources Regulator has commenced an investigation to determine the cause and circumstances of the incident.

5 July 2017 - Springvale Colliery Blue Mountains

A flying object hit a worker and inflicted a serious injury while he was attempting to free a jammed conveyor chain of a continuous miner in the underground workings of the mine on 5 July 2018. The NSW Resources Regulator has commenced an investigation to determine the cause and circumstances of the incident.

A worker suffered serious leg injuries during a nose-to-tail collision between two rear dump haul trucks. The injured worker was transported to hospital for treatment. The NSW Resources Regulator has commenced an investigation into the incident.
