The law requires that specified high risk plant must be registered. This includes registering the design of the plant and also the individual plant items.

The types of plant that require registration are grouped into general industry plant or mining specific plant.

General industry plant and mining specific plant

General industry plant is plant used generally in any industry, including the mining industry, and must be registered with SafeWork NSW. For more information see our general industry plant page.

Mining specific plant is only used in the mining industry. All mining specific plant must be registered by the NSW Resources Regulator. For information registering mining specific plant, see below.

What are the different types of registration?

There are two types of plant registration; item registration and design registration.

Design registration applies to all items manufactured to the same design.

Item registration is the registration of each piece of plant. The application for item registration must be made by the person in control of the plant.

Mining-specific plant requiring design and item registration are specified in clause 177 of the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2014.

Design registration

What types of mining specific plant need to be design registered?

Mining-specific plant requiring design and item registration are specified in clause 177 of the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Regulations 2014 and are listed below.

See the list of fact sheets below for further information on design registrations.
