Geoscience Information services

The Geological Survey of NSW (GSNSW) manages the storage, quality assurance and accessibility of the department's geoscience information. It develops and manages the databases and online systems that store and deliver the information to the community.

Its geospatial and information teams are responsible for:

  • providing map products
  • geoscientific data downloads
  • the online mapping application MinView, to view all geoscience related data
  • NSW Geology phone app and mobile-friendly datasets
  • providing graphics for publications
  • maintaining the GIS database (Statewide Geology Geodatabase)
  • complying with the GeoSciML open standard as part of the global OneGeology project
  • digitising documents such as mineral exploration reports, maps, plans and heritage items and entering them into DIGS®
  • managing data from mineral exploration reports
  • the mobile web application Common Ground, which provides easy to understand information on resource titles information and processes for the community
  • producing self-guided tour apps and brochures in support of geotrail development for the general public
  • archiving hardcopies with State Records
  • managing and developing online systems and their supporting databases
