About the project

The NSW Government has announced a revolutionary new framework to map, monitor and protect groundwater resources across NSW.

For the first time in Australia, state of the art computer modelling will be used together with groundwater baseline data to map and protect underground water resources across the State.

Water is vital for communities across NSW and the NSW Government is increasing mapping and monitoring to make informed decisions to ensure water resources are protected.

The first areas to be analysed through the Groundwater Baseline Project are the Gunnedah, Gloucester and Clarence Moreton basins.

Additional bores will be installed across the three basins to complement the more than 5,000 NSW Office of Water monitoring stations that are constantly measuring the quality and quantity of water in rivers, streams, groundwater and dams in NSW.

It is important to note the majority of water allocation in NSW, between 60 to 70 per cent, is used for irrigated agriculture, while only 1.5 per cent of the State's water is used by the mining industry.

The water used by the mining industry comes from deep underground and not freshwater aquifers used by households and farmers.

Once these three basins have been fully mapped, the monitoring and modelling project will continue in other parts of NSW where sedimentary basins containing coal that may be of interest to the mining or the gas industry.

This is a joint initiative between the NSW Division of Resources and Energy and the NSW Office of Water.
