23rd July 2018

The Resources Regulator has attended Cadia Mine near Orange, after receiving notification of a seismic event from the operator.

Shortly before 1.00pm on Sunday 22 July 2018, the mine recorded a seismic event with a calculated magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter Scale. The event was also recorded by Geosciences Australia.

Workers underground were directed to withdraw to safety refuges as a precaution, while inspections were undertaken to establish whether mine workings were damaged.

All workers were accounted for and brought to the surface by 7pm on Sunday.

The mine continues to undertake inspections to determine if any damage to underground workings has occurred, and has halted mining operations for 24 hours in accordance with site procedures.

The mine is reviewing data from systems monitoring at the damaged Northern Tailings Storage Facility. Real time monitoring currently shows that the integrity of the dam wall was not further compromised by this event.

The Resources Regulator will continue to monitor the mine.
